Audi’s superfast RS5

22 June 2019

AUDI is to introduce a new executive family model for those in an exceptional hurry, with about £70,000 to spend.

There is also a sleek coupe version for those to whom appearance is of particular importance, with both being known as the RS5.

The five-door family model is the Sportback whilst the sleek two-door version is the RS5 Coupe, with both being able to reach 60mph in under four seconds.

Prices start at £68,985 and first deliveries are expected at the end of the month.

Initially the cars will be known as limited-production special editions before going on sale sometime next year as a full-blown model variant.

Despite boasting tighter speed limits and more cameras than the whole of Europe put together, Britain is among the biggest markets for ultra high-powered cars such as these.

Powered by a twin turbocharged 3.9-litre six cylinder engine developing 444bhp with an awesome 600Nm of pulling power, the newcomers scorch to 60mph in 3.9 seconds.

They are so powerful that the top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, although they are otherwise capable of at least 175mph.

To handle the power and performance they get uprated suspension and beefier brakes plus a special differential to send 60 per cent of the power to the rear wheels.

There are also 20-inch alloy wheels and tinted windows, whilst aluminium-look exterior fittings such as the grille surround, window cappings and door mirror housings are replaced by high gloss black elements and there is the loud Audi Sport exhaust system to amplify the engine’s soundtrack.

Inside, Fine Nappa leather and Alcantara combination upholstery with contrast diamond stitching for the RS super sports seats is exclusive to the Audi Sport Edition models, and they also gain piano black inlays and a panoramic glass sunroof.

These are in addition to the standard all-LED lighting, fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit with RS-specific displays, Audi Smartphone Interface bringing Apple Carplay and Android Auto on board, and MMI navigation plus with MMI touch incorporating LTE internet connectivity as part of the Audi connect package.

The Sportback provides space for five people, with the square luggage bay width of exactly one metre creating a 480-litre luggage capacity. Folding down the rear seats with their 40:20:40 split ratio increases that to 1,300 litres.

Both the Sportback and Coupe will cost the same, with just 500 models in total destined for the UK this year, although that figure will rise significantly next year.
