Jaguar E-PACE

The Jaguar E-PACE

14 June 2018

NO sooner has Jaguar introduced a completely new SUV to the executive sector of the market than it is given an update.

The E-PACE gets a new high-efficiency petrol engine with 35mpg economy, plus what the company calls Smart Settings.

This is a spy system that George Orwell would have been proud of, with Big Brother antics beginning as soon as the driver reaches the car.

Firstly the new engine, which is a two-litre petrol unit generating 200bhp with acceleration to 60mph in 7.7 seconds.

It has a particulate filter to ensure the cleanest possible emissions, and boasts a CO2 rating of just 186g/km, which is good for a crossover or Sport Utility Vehicle.

The engine is added to the existing line-up of more powerful 250bhp and 300bhp units, and costs from £33,260.

The car also boasts so-called Smart Settings, which is Jaguar’s self-learning technology, just like the history file on a computer.

Basically, it follows your every move and then tailors itself to those preferences next time you use it.

It is a system that was pioneered on the all-electric I-PACE model that

learns the driver’s habits and anticipates their needs to make life easier.

The vehicle recognises the approaching driver, based on both a key fob and smartphone Bluetooth signal. It will then adjust the seat, climate and infotainment system based on the driver’s previous preference.

Over time, algorithms tailor those settings based on time, location, weather and behaviour patterns.

For example, it will pre-heat the steering wheel and seats on a cold day, and change the media source on a particular day of the week or time of day. Up to eight profiles can be set up, making it useful for fleet users and those who share the vehicle within the workplace or family.

The Intelligent Phone Reminder function will also tell the driver if they forget their smartphone, while the Predictive Call List learns patterns of phone use to cue up popular contacts at the appropriate time.

The Smart Settings system is offered as part of the Connect Pro Pack, which also has a 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot, Pro Services and Navigation Pro,  offering real-time traffic information, door-to-door routing from a smartphone, street view and parking availability.

The vehicle is also claiming advanced driving dynamics as a result of a system that monitors vehicle movements every two milliseconds and calculates the required damping force every ten milliseconds to respond to the driver’s inputs and road surface changes.

This achieves greater control and minimises body roll. Rough surfaces and off-road conditions are sensed instantly, and the damping adapts accordingly.

E-PACE prices start at £28,500 for the 150bhp 2.0-litre diesel, rising to £50,740 for the 300bhp two-litre twin turbo R-Dynamic HSE automatic with four wheel drive.
