Jeep’s new Wrangler

12 October 2018

JEEP opens the order book for its new Wrangler range today, with prices of up to £48,000 for the four-door 4x4 newcomer.

The range starts at £44,495 for the two-door 2.2-litre diesel-powered Sahara, with 200bhp of power driving all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Claiming to be the most capable off-road Wrangler ever, it includes two four-wheel drive, on-demand full time systems – Command-Trac and Rock-Trac – plus Tru-Lock electric front and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited slip differential and electronic front anti-roll bar disconnect.

In other words, as far as venturing on to the really rough stuff is concerned, the new Wrangler claims to be able to go where others fear to tread.

It also comes with new exterior styling, a refreshed interior with greater storage capacity, and a full range of new engines.

These include the 2.2-litre turbodiesel plus a two-litre turbocharged petrol unit.

Visually there are new LED headlamps and rear lights, plus an 8.4-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There is also improved safety content including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, reversing camera, electronic roll mitigation and four standard air bags.

Two four-wheel drive systems are on offer, comprising Command-Trac on the Sahara and Overland trim level, or Rock-Trac on Rubicon trim. Both systems feature the new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case for a continuous monitoring and management of the torque sent to all four wheels.

The new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine generates 200bhp at 3500rpm and 450Nm of torque at 2000rpm.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which arrives here later in the year, achieves 272 horsepower at 5250rpm and 400Nm of torque at 3000rpm.

Claiming to be the only authentic full open-air 4x4 on the market, this latest incarnation of the Wrangler offers various top combinations, including the Sky one-touch powertop, new zipperless Premium Sunrider soft top and Freedom Top, which is a removable, three-panel hard top.

Inside, the instrument cluster gets a seven-inch TFT information LED display in full colour and allows the driver to configure information in more than 100 ways. There are also integrated buttons on the steering wheel to control audio, voice and speed functions.
