PEUGEOT has revamped its most affordable model, the 108 city car this week and Vauxhall has announced that its sporty new Corsa GSi will be on sale from July.

The revised baby Peugeot costs from £9,225 and gets some striking new design touches to create a more youthful appeal, no doubt inspired by the success of the colourful rival Citroen DS ranges.

Among the striking new metallic paint options are Green Fizz and Calvi Blue, which are available on Allure and Collection models.

These contrast with a new Raven Black roof and gloss black door mirrors, whilst also new is the Green Fizz retractable electric fabric roof.

There is also a new engine option in the guise of a one-litre 72bhp unit that produces slightly lower CO2 emissions, plus a raft of significant technology enhancements.

These include an improved colour touchscreen with Mirror Screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Mirror Screen enables the driver to display compatible apps on the seven-inch touchscreen and manage them using the vehicle controls. The touchscreen is available as standard on Active trim level and above and comes with DAB Digital radio plus USB and 3.5 mm Jack point for external audio devices.

Improvements to the safety technology come in the form of Active City Brake and Lane Departure Warning System options, which now have a traffic sign recognition system. This technology is available on the Allure and Collection trim level as an option, costing £480.

The revised 108 range comes with Peugeot’s so-called Just Add Fuel package that includes three years’ insurance for up to three drivers, car tax, warranty, road side assistance and routine servicing for one fixed monthly fee.

Meanwhile Vauxhall has announced this week that the order book will open in July for its new Corsa GSi, with the first cars due to arrive here in autumn.

Built on the Corsa VXR chassis, the new GSi is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine generating 150bhp of power and 220Nm of torque, or pulling power.

This endows the sporty newcomer with acceleration to 60mph in 8.9 seconds, and a top speed nudging 130mph.

There is a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, claimed economy of 45mpg and a CO2 rating of 139g/km.

There are optional lightweight alloy wheels with 215/40 x 18 tyres, plus standard large front air intakes, a sculptured bonnet and prominent rear spoiler to set the GSi apart from other Corsa models.

A prominent rear spoiler, chrome tailpipe and red-painted front brake calipers complete the sporting exterior look.

Inside are optional leather Recaro seats and a leather sports steering wheel in addition to aluminium pedals.

As with most other Corsas, the GSi comes with Vauxhall’s IntelliLink infotainment system, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Prices will be announced when ordering opens in July.
