Volkswagen runs Amok

VOLKSWAGEN is taking its most popular pick-up even more upmarket with a luxurious new Aventura version costing in excess of £45,000.

The idea is to create the sort of striking appearance for which punters are prepared to pay a handsome premium, without compromising the vehicle’s renowned rugged off-road ability.

Describing it as the most luxurious Amarok pick-up ever, there are 20-inch Talca alloy wheels, body-coloured sports bar with Aventura badging and chrome-plated side bars with step and LED spot lighting. It retains the vehicle’s under-body cladding, power folding mirrors and a protective coating for the load compartment but there is a reduced price for special matt paint finishes. Offered in either Ravenna Blue or Indium Grey, the matt paint is a £2,335 option, which is a saving of 25 per cent over the usual price, although VAT is extra. Also available are Mountain top roll covers made specifically for the Aventura model. Available in black or silver, they cost £1387 plus VAT.

Inside the newcomer are ErgoComfort seats with 14-way adjustment, whilst the seats are faced in soft Nappa leather and the multi-function steering wheel is also leather-wrapped and is fitted with paddle shifts.

Standard equipment includes a Lights and Vision package comprising automatic headlights with separate daytime running lights, coming home feature and windscreen wiper intermittent control with rain sensor.

There are also front fog lights with cornering function as standard.

Powering the Aventura is VW’s most powerful 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 engine generating 255bhp, or up to 270bhp when using the overboost function. The engine manages 580Nm of torque between 1,400 and 3,000 rpm, while permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox are standard.

The Amarok Aventura costs about £45,000 including VAT, or £39,960 for businesses that can claim it back.

The vehicle is the best pick-up for towing a trailer, horsebox or caravan, according to the industry’s most important towing awards.

The Amarok picked up the Best Pick-Up award at the Tow Car Awards last time, which is run and judged by Practical Caravan, What Car? and The Camping and Caravanning Club.

The vehicles have to endure a rigorous test process, with the judges seeking vehicles with not only exceptional towing prowess but ones that also have practical features to make a tow car driver's life easy, and which will be enjoyable to live with every day. The final scoring also reflects a vehicle's value for money, safety standards and resale values.

Out of all the pick-ups tested, the 225bhp Volkswagen Amarok 3.0-litre TDI Aventura was judged to be the finest.

Driving the V6 is a hoot, with it being the nearest thing to a high-performance pick-up, boasting a 120mph top speed and acceleration to 60mph in eight seconds.

Combining car-like comfort and equipment with full off-road capability, there is selectable four wheel drive with the manual models, and permanent 4WD with the automatics, plus an optional differential lock to tackle the really rough stuff.

Inside, the new dash panel incorporates Volkswagen’s MIB infotainment system with touchscreen navigation, Guide & Inform, Car-Net and App-Connect systems. Bluetooth and DAB digital radio are also now standard.

A comprehensive list of safety kit and driving aids includes four airbags, automatic post-collision braking, park pilot and a rear-view camera also enhance comfort, convenience and safety.
