Volvo extends S60 range

17 March 2020

VOLVO has extended its S60 range to incorporate more engine choices and equipment grades, including a 4WD petrol-electric hybrid.

There is also a new trim level that focuses on luxury and craftmanship for the third generation of the firm’s mid-size saloon.

The existing T5 turbocharged 250bhp petrol unit is joined by a new all-wheel-drive T8 plug-in hybrid, combining a 300bhp petrol engine with a 90bhp electric motor, giving a total output of 390bhp. Performance is suitably electrifying, with a 0-60mph acceleration time of just four and a half seconds.

The T8’s 11.8kWh battery provides an electric-only range of up to 35 miles, with CO2 emissions from 39g/km. Theoretical fuel economy is up to 175mpg.

Like the T5, the T8 uses a Volvo Drive-E petrol engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The R-Design Edition launch trim is replaced by R-Design Plus and is joined by the new Inscription Plus variant.

My impressive test model was the T5 Inscription Plus that has a basic price of £38,835 but this was boosted to £45,310 with extras.

These included an upgraded sound system and a useful winter pack that includes a heated steering wheel and wipers plus a head up display projected on to the windscreen ahead of the driver.

There was also a convenience pack, metallic paint and other associated items that combine to enhance the driving experience and endow the vehicle with an even more impressive appearance.

Performance-wise there is a 145mph top speed from the four cylinder two-litre 250bhp engine, with acceleration to 60mph in just over six seconds.

This makes the Volvo more than a match for rival German offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and there is an even sportier version on offer too.

R-Design Plus is designed to provide a more focused driving experience, thanks to stiffer springs, faster-responding dampers, thicker anti-roll bars and a 12mm lower ride height. Other R-Design Plus highlights include a head-up display, gearshift paddles, high-gloss black exterior trim elements, a choice of 18, 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels, Metal Mesh aluminium interior inlays and part-leather sports seats.

Inscription Plus trim features chrome trim along with a different design of alloy wheels plus fine Nappa leather upholstery and Driftwood décor inlays. Inscription Plus versions also get cooled seats in addition to the heated seats of other S60s.

The new S60 is built in South Carolina, America and is the first Volvo to be sold without a diesel engine, signalling the company’s commitment to electrification.

The range costs from £37,935 for the T5 R Design Plus. Company car tax costs are from £212 a month for a 20% taxpayer, while PCH finance payments are from £300 a month based on an initial rental of £5,062, an 18-month contract and 10,000 miles per annum.

The T8 Twin Engine R-Design Plus is £49,805, and its more tax-efficient petrol-electric drivetrain means a 40% taxpayer would pay £265 company car tax a month.
